They also receive health care services from the
Wilkes County Health Department, Savannah Valley Rehabilitation
Center, five home health care providers, a 47-bed nursing home,
a three assisted living facilities.
The large number of antebellum and Victorian
homes, and museums have made tourism an integral part of the economy.
Visitors and residents alike are entertained and informed at three outstanding
museums; the Washington Historical Museum, Callaway Plantation, the Robert
Toombs House State Historic Site.
Business and industry are prominent in the
community’s economy. Over 300 business are now in the count; several substantial
industries can be found in and around the city. Fiberglass, plastics, paper
products, wood products, apparel, and dyeing serve as the local manufacturing
basis. Washington offers an attractive and convenient setting for new industrial
plants. Agriculture continues its significant contribution to the economic base.
