Area Information

Welcome to Washington Georgia-Wilkes. The area known as "The Classic South" is a vibrant community of diverse citizens, blending the best of old and new. A large number of Antebellum and Victorian homes, and museums grace the area. Steeped in history, blessed with a rich architectural heritage, nurtured by streams and rolling hills, forest of pine and hardwood, adorned with azaleas and dogwood. But this is not just a "place in the heart." It is a vibrant community of diverse citizens living and working together for success.

The town was named in honor of George Washington and was confirmed by him on his visit to Georgia in 1791 as the first city chartered in his name. The world’s first cotton gin, which made possible the prosperous era when "Cotton was King", was perfected by Eli Whitney at "Mount Pleasant", a plantation east of Washington. In May of 1865, President of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis and members of his Cabinet signed their last official papers, and the Confederate government was dissolved.

The Wilkes County Board of Education has the responsibility of operating a High School, a Middle School, an Elementary School, and a Primary School.

The health care facilities of Washington-Wilkes are impressive for a small community. Wills Memorial Hospital is a 50-bed, full service hospital. The large number of antebellum and Victorian homes, and museums have made tourism an integral part of the economy. Business and industry are prominent in the community’s economy. Agriculture continues its significant contribution to the economic base. Wilkes County leads the State in numbers of beef cattle.

Washington and Wilkes County has a recreation department. The department offers a wide range of activities for all age groups.  Because of our central location, there are many opportunities to attend sporting events. If golf is your "bag", the Washington-Wilkes Country Club offers a great 9 hole course. They also have 2 tennis courts, 3 fishing lakes, a swimming pool, and a club house. Washington/Wilkes boasts an extremely active and talented "Little Theatre". This group has been active for many years, and each year presents several varied and wonderful productions. The Mary Willis Library was the first free public library in Georgia. It was built in 1889 and contains a stained-glass window designed and executed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The library is now a "hub" for a Regional Library system.
